It is the only university in Iran that offers a master program for Medical Biotechnology and only 6-9 students are admitted annually according on their performance in National Graduate Studies Entrance Exam concours. The university is the first and the only one in Tehran and the best of the three ones in Iran, in which the M.Sc. degree in Nanotechnology Engineering has been offered.
The main purpose of the establishment of the Faculty of Art of TMU has been to provide suitable environment to attract talented students, train them and make through them scholars in the branches of arts for the universities all over Iran. On this basis, 182 experts have graduated. A great number of the directors, professors and lecturers in other universities and organizations are the graduates of this college.
The Faculty of Engineering trains students and conducts research in the main branches of engineering including Chemical, Civil,Computer & Electrical, Industrial,Information Technology, Mechanical, Materials, and Mining engineering. There are more than 900 M.Sc. and 200 Ph.D. students in the school. The staff of the faculty consist of 124 professors, associate professors, and assistant professors supported by 34 technicians and secretaries. They will become highly qualified specialists in practical application of agriculture science and will be able to instruct at universities in the country after graduation.
The Faculty of Basic Sciences was established in 1983. It has five departments: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics and Educational Group of Statistics. The Biology department is active in biochemistry, biophysics, genetics and plant biology. The Chemistry department has four branches: Analytical, Organic and Inorganic chemistry and chemical physics. The activity in geology department is concerned with structural geology and tectonics, engineering geology, economic geology and petrology. Mathematics department is engaged in pure and applied mathematics. All departments of the faculty give admission to students at M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels. The faculty has 50 permanent academic staff members (two full professors, seven associate professors and 41 assistant professors). The Faculty of Natural Resources and Marine Sciences of Tarbiat Modares University was founded in 1982 at the city of Noor besides the Caspian sea. The faculty offers a wide range of research opportunities in nine specialized area. Postgraduates are welcome to work on the M.Sc. and Ph.D. projects under the guidance of experienced professors. The faculty includes the academic departments of Watershed, Forestry, Fishery, Wood and Paper Science and Industry, Environment, Range Management, Meteorology, Fish Biology, and Marine Physics. The student here acquire fundamental knowledge in their courses and at the end they should carry out their research under the supervision of a professor of the faculty. Students after graduation can be employed in leading universities and research centers in the country.
The Faculty of Medical Sciences started in 1983 by admitting 65 M.Sc. students in medical sciences fields.
The first group of M.Sc. students graduated in 1985. Doctorate postgraduate courses started in 1988 by admitting 26 PhDs. Students study in six fields of medical sciences including Biostatistics, Parasitology, Anatomy, Bacteriology and Biochemistry according to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s plans for development and promoting higher postgraduate courses in the country. The first group of PhD students graduated in 1993.
The Faculty of Medical Sciences, with more than 100 PhD graduates in 20 field of medical sciences, has made a considerable contribution to educating and providing the academic staff required for higher education and research centers of the country. The University is not named after Sayyed Hassan Modaress, the revolutionist cleric. Rather, it is a reference to its original purpose, in response to the expulsion from Iran of professors who supported the Shah's regime. Tarbiat Modares University was initially in charge of training (tarbiat, تربيت, in Persian) university lecturers (modares, مدرس, in Persian), and selecting its students after an "ideologic" screening process. Later, however, it admitted students similar to other universities.
